How to Jump Start a Car

One of the most common problems motorists encounter is a dead battery. Keeping a set of jumper cables in your vehicle and knowing how to use them is a basic skill any motorist can master.

Line your car next to another and ensure the working car is turned off. Place the red jumper clamp on the positive terminal of the dead battery and the other red clamp on the positive terminal of the good battery. Attach a black clamp to the negative terminal of the good battery. Be very careful, as these clamps are now live. Place the other black clamp on a metal, non-moving part of the car. Start the working car, then start the car with the dead battery.
